THE ART OF BEING HERENOW
BE CREATIVE. You must be tirelessly creative. Otherwise, people won’t hire you to solve their problems. The perfect solution is usually hiding in the shadows. Do whatever it takes to find it.
BE A NETWORK. If you can’t do it, find somebody else who can. Specialists are everywhere. But you won’t see their gifts unless you get to know them. Build a new relationship as often as you can. Thrive on interdependence. It’s not what you know. It’s who you know.
BE CLEAR. Be heard. Let others know you are hearing them. Don’t spin like a politician. Communicate like a human being.
BE RESPONSIVE. The customer is always right. And even when they aren’t, you must address their concerns. Skillful listening, constructive honesty and kindness are a must during any client interaction.
BE ADAPTABLE. The only constant is change. With change comes fear. But opportunity is close behind. So don’t break, bend instead. See every change as an opportunity. And if the way you’re doing it doesn’t work anymore… find a new way to do it!
BE OPEN. Soak up information from all directions. Know what’s going on “out there”. Know your existing clients. Know your potential clients. Ask them questions. Ask everyone questions. Never stop learning.
BE FAIR. All relationships are based on trust and integrity. Do the right thing even when nobody is looking.
BE ORGANIZED. Without structure, we’re not an organization… we’re a mob. And mobs don’t create things. They destroy them. To that end, counteract disorder wherever you find it. Take the shattered pieces of a bad brief and make them make sense. Create order and meaning each day. Structure keeps you focused. Structure keeps the client at ease.
BE PRODUCTIVE. No matter how cool your computer rendering is, no matter how brilliant your words, no matter how fabulous your whatever is, if you can’t output it, distribute it, or make it known, it basically doesn’t exist. Orient yourself to productivity. Schedule productivity. Non-delivery is totally unacceptable.
BE “HOPPY”. A positive attitude doesn’t guarantee positive results. But it helps. And it makes the journey much more enjoyable for everyone. Just ask our founder, David Hopkins.
BE YOU. If your personality and emotions didn’t matter, we’d just get a computer to do your job. In our technological world, the human touch is becoming more valuable every second. Your client will appreciate a little humanity. They’re human too.
BE A FAMILY. Just getting along? That isn’t good enough. Our bonds must be stronger. After all, we spend more time with each other than with our “real” families. Our interactions must be underscored with respect, communication, and sometimes forgiveness.
BE HERENOW. Life is what happens while you’re busy making plans. Or while you’re regretting a mistake. But you’re breathing air at this place in the present moment. So why waste it? When the future arrives, it will arrive in the here and now. Be there to meet it. Take action. Not sure if the time is right to start living? Continually ask yourself: If not here, where? If not now, when?
